Awareness campaign

Global money week is an annual global awareness-raising campaign on the importance of ensuring that young people, from an early age, are financially aware, and are gradually acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve financial well-being and financial resilience. In Sweden, a number of banks, authorities, organizations and companies organize activities during the week, which falls on 21-27 March 2022. Throughout the Global Money Week, children and youth are reached through lectures, social media and various competitions and challenges.

Game

Gimi is a simple app that has been designed for children to learn how to manage their own finances (for example, pocket money). The Gimi app is a unique tool for children to gain financial understanding. With Gimi, children learn-by-doing and engage with money under parent’s supervision while getting access to financial education adapted to their needs. The app, which is translated into English, Swedish, Norwegian and Dutch, aims to encourage experiential and social learning so children can learn how to handle their personal finances.

Young Private Economy is a forum that attempts to enhance the financial literacy of high school students in Sweden and teach them about finances and saving. The project is free of charge and independent for both students and teachers. It provides lectures and digital aid for anyone who is interested in learning responsible use of money.

THE LUCKY PENNY: A MAGAZINE FOR CHILDREN

Targeting the younger public is the quarterly magazine Lyckoslanten (The Lucky penny). The magazine has been published since 1926 and distributed by Swedbank and some independent savings banks, to children aged between 10 and 12. The magazine is ordered free of charge by schools for students in grades 4–6. Today it is one of Sweden’s largest children’s magazines with a circulation of 340,000 copies per issue.

The goal of the project is to make the people who work closely with immigrants more knowledgeable about not only personal finances but also the areas that might be tricky for immigrants. The “Dare to talk about money” project offers one-day courses for people who interact with immigrants as part of their daily job. It is a collaboration between several governmental authorities, consumer organisations, local budget and debt advisors and consumer advisors.

The Swedish House of Finance (SHF) is an equally private and government funded, non-profit organization. It organises many seminars and conferences every year to disseminate knowledge on handling finances. SHF is a world-class research center and an independent platform to discuss matters related to financial sector. It’s mission to enhance the knowledge capital of the country to guarantee the long-term prosperity of Sweden’s financial marketplace and to nurture innovation and expertise. Promoting financial literacy among the general public, especially the younger generation, is one strategy adopted to fulfil their mission.

Pengalabbet (The money lab) is a web game for kids in the primary school about day-to-day finances. The premise of the game is to earn and be responsible for a monthly salary. The game targets kids and their parents as well as Home Economics teachers. Players test different jobs with different salaries and decide how much they will spend on food, housing and other expenses. By being forced to react to different options and situations that occur on a daily basis, kids learn to reflect over the things in their lives that cost money – and how much.

Tool

Koll på cashen (Keep Your Cash) contains broad educational material about personal finances for students in upper secondary school. The material consists of five videos and a supplemental handbook for teachers that have been adapted to the social sciences curriculum for the first year of upper secondary school. The material has been based on the school curriculum.
